Word Hunt traces its lineage to Boggle, the word game invented by Allan Turoff. Turoff was a New York-based designer trained at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He built a prototype called Find-A-Word in 1969. Parker Brothers rejected it. Three years later, in 1972, they revisited the design, renamed it Boggle, and released it for the 1973 holiday season.
The original Boggle used a 4x4 tray of 16 lettered dice. Players shook the tray, a three-minute sand timer started, and everyone wrote down words formed from adjacent letters. Words had to be at least three letters long. Each letter after the first had to be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal neighbor. No cube could be used twice in the same word. When the timer ran out, players compared lists. Duplicate words were eliminated. Only unique finds scored.
Word Hunt uses the same core mechanic. You connect adjacent letters in a grid to form valid English words. The grid is digital, the timer is two minutes, and the dictionary validation is instant. No sand timer, no paper, no arguing over whether a word is real.
The strategy that separates good players from average ones comes from linguistics. English builds words from morphemes: stems, prefixes, and suffixes. Find STAR and you can check for STARS, STARE, STARED, STARING. Research by Davide Crepaldi and colleagues at Royal Holloway, University of London showed that skilled readers automatically decompose words into stem and affix. This is not a conscious process. How to Play Word Hunt
Click Start. The two-minute timer begins.
- Click a letter in the grid to start forming a word
- Click adjacent letters to build your word
- Adjacent means horizontally, vertically, or diagonally next to the last letter
- Each letter tile can only be used once per word
- Click the last selected letter again or press Submit to check your word
- Valid words of three letters or more are added to your found list
- Keep finding words until the timer reaches zero
Your score is based on the total length of all valid words found. Longer words are worth exponentially more.

The Morpheme Multiplier
The point scale is exponential. A three-letter word might earn 1 point. A seven-letter word can earn 15 or more. One seven-letter word is worth fifteen three-letter words. This single fact changes how you should play.
- Work from vowels outward. Vowels are the nucleus of most English words. Start at a vowel and check all surrounding consonants. A, E, I, O, U each anchor a cluster of possible words. If the grid has two A tiles, check both neighborhoods.
- Chain word families. Find STAR. Immediately check STARS, STARE, STARED, STARING, STARTER. Each suffix adds one letter and multiplies the score. Suffixes to check: -S, -ED, -ING, -ER, -EST, -LY. Prefixes to check: RE-, UN-, PRE-, DIS-.
- Hunt long first. Scan the grid for seven-letter possibilities before collecting three-letter scraps. A single long word found in the first 30 seconds can anchor your entire score. Short words are filler.
- Read the grid spatially. The adjacency constraint creates natural word clusters. One good cluster of letters can produce five to eight words in the same area. Exhaust a cluster before moving to another part of the grid.
- Do not overthink short words. If you see a three-letter word, submit it instantly. Do not spend ten seconds confirming it. The time cost is not worth the single point. Move on.
The morpheme research backs this approach. Crepaldi's work showed that readers recognize suffixes automatically at word endings, not at word beginnings. Your brain is already primed to see -ING and -ED as units. In Word Hunt, you just need to train your eyes to scan for them in a grid the way you scan for them on a page.
Three Rounds, Three Strategies
Round 1: The Quick Three-Letter Start
The grid loads. You spot T-A-R connecting diagonally in the top left. TAR. Submit. A-R-E going right. ARE. Submit. Two words in five seconds. You are warming up, scanning for longer possibilities. The grid has an S near the TAR cluster. STARE? You trace S-T-A-R-E across five adjacent tiles. Valid. Five letters. That single word is worth more than TAR and ARE combined.
Round 2: The Word Family Chain
You find L-A-T-E reading across the third row. LATE. Four letters. You check for extensions. The R above E connects diagonally. LATER. Five letters. The D below R connects. LATER D? No. But D-A-R-T going diagonally from the D gives DART. And R-A-T-E using the R, A, T, E in a different path gives RATE. One cluster, four words. The morpheme multiplier is working.
Round 3: The End-Game Burst
Thirty seconds left. You have been methodical, working clusters. Now you switch to rapid-fire mode. W-I-N-D in the bottom row. WIND. Submit. W-I-N within the same path. WIN. Submit. D-I-N. DIN. Submit. Three words in eight seconds from one cluster. The timer hits zero. Your final score includes a seven-letter word found early, a word-family chain from the middle, and a burst of three-letter words at the end. That is what a complete round looks like.
Variations of the Format
Word-finding games come in several formats.
- Classic Boggle. The original dice-based game. Players write words independently on paper, then compare. Shared words are eliminated. Only unique finds score. Three-minute timer.
- Big Boggle. A 5x5 grid instead of 4x4, with 25 dice instead of 16. More letters, more possible words, longer words possible. Released by Parker Brothers as an expansion.
- Classic Word Search. Words are hidden in straight lines within a grid. You are given a list to find. No adjacency building, no timer in most versions. A different kind of scanning.
